A Day in Jaipur: A Regal Journey Through Time

Two tourists climb stone steps at Jaigarh Fort, Jaipur, with arched walls and greenery in the background.

From sun-drenched forts to vibrant bazaars, embrace the essence of Jaipur in a single day.

A dip into Jaipur’s charm is not to be rushed.  But for the traveler with a full day at their disposal, it is possible to embrace the heart of the Pink City— and the stories of its architecture, legends, cuisine, and crafts—through a carefully planned itinerary.

You will start the day at the historical forts and their environs, wander through lanes lined with artisans, take a break for a traditional meal or snacky array of lip-smacking local treats, and finish with the glitter of local bazaars emerging in the evening light.

Amber Fort & Panna Meena ka Kund

Our day begins in the peaceful hills just outside Jaipur, where the Amber Fort rises majestically.  Built in the 16th century by Raja Man Singh I, this fort is made of red sandstone and marble. As you stroll through the many-layered courtyards, temple spaces, and Sheesh Mahal ( Palace of Mirrors), our English-speaking guide breathes life into the stories of Rajput kings, queens, and their passion for extraordinary building construction.

A few steps away from Amber Fort, in the midst of the ancient settlement of Amber,  is the beautiful Panna Meena ka Kund, a one-of-its-kind symmetrical stepwell dating back to the 8th century.

Meandering Through Amber Village

Provided time allows, wander – or drive – through the picturesque village of Amber with its 365 temples (one for each day of the year!) their construction dating back to over 600 years ago and most of them still in their original state, untouched by modern renovations. Or visit the Anokhi Museum of Blockprinting located in a restored medieval merchant’s house.

Tourists ascend the stone steps of Jaigarh Fort, with a scenic view of the fort walls and lush greenery in the background.

Lunch at a traditional Haveli or Modern Restaurant

Lunch at one of  two unique venues.

  • Option 1 : A traditional Rajasthani thali meal ( pre-set menu) served at an ancestral haveli ( mansion).
  • Option 2 : An a la carte meal at a restaurant offering a range of traditional dishes and snacks.
Jantar Mantar: Where Science Meets Art

At the center of the walled city is the Jantar Mantar, an astronomical observatory built in the 18th Century by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of the fortified city of Jaipur.  It is a UNESCO World Heritage site containing monumental instruments for tracking the movement of celestial bodies with amazing precision. The architectural beauty of the sandstone and marble instruments is as astounding and impressive as the scientific purpose that they were built to serve.

Hawa Mahal: Wind, Women, and Wonder

A short stroll from the Jantar Mantar brings us to the Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds), This iconic emblem of Jaipur, a pink pyramidal facade made of red sandstone and towering 50 feet over the bustling bazaars below, has 953 elaborately carved and latticed miniature windows with open halls, corridors and pillars behind. It was originally commissioned so the royal ladies could remain screened from public view while gazing down at the scenes of activity swirling below.  Today, the uppermost levels offer sweeping views of Jaipur, while the delicate latticework captures the city’s famed golden light, making it a perfect spot for photographers.

Old City Walk, Artisan Visits & Sweet Experiences

As the sun starts to soften, stroll through the bazaars that date back to the founding of the city (Johri Bazaar and Bapu Bazaar) where artisans create traditional jewellery, textiles, and blockprinted fabrics. Finish your walk with a visit to a traditional sweet shop, to sample Jaipur’s famous Ghewar ( a milk and dry fruit based sweet) or Mawa Kachori ( a fried savoury delight).
